Practical information

Everything you need to know before your first session: prescription, how sessions work, what to bring, reimbursement and how to reach the practice.

Do I need a prescription to see a physiotherapist?

For sessions to be covered by French national health insurance (Assurance Maladie), a medical prescription is generally required. It can be written by your GP, a specialist, a surgeon or a dentist (for the jaw). It does not need to specify the number of sessions or the techniques: the physiotherapist determines these during the assessment.

Direct access without a prescription exists in certain situations provided for by regulation. You can also consult without a prescription at your own expense, for example for a running analysis or a preventive assessment. If in doubt about your situation, contact the practice before your first appointment.

How does a session work?

The first session is an assessment: we take the time to discuss your expectations, history, difficulties and goals, then assess mobility, strength, pain and the movements that cause you trouble. This assessment lets us build an appropriate treatment plan together.

Follow-up sessions put the agreed rehabilitation programme into practice: manual techniques, active exercises, education and advice. Progress is assessed regularly and goals adjusted as you improve. Exercises to do at home between sessions are an integral part of treatment.

The number of sessions depends on the reason for your visit, how your symptoms evolve, how regularly you do your home exercises and your goals.

What should I bring?

  • Your prescription, if you have one, and your carte Vitale or insurance details
  • Your medical reports, operative reports and previous imaging (X-rays, MRI, ultrasound)
  • Comfortable clothing that allows the area concerned to be examined and moved
  • For a running analysis: your usual running shoes
  • For jaw treatment: your night guard if you have one, your dental or orthodontic assessments, and your sleep study report in case of sleep apnoea

Fees and reimbursement

With a medical prescription, physiotherapy sessions are reimbursed by French national health insurance at 60% of the agreed rate, with the remainder generally covered by your complementary insurance (mutuelle). The fees below are indicative: they vary with the treatment, its duration and the physiotherapist, and are confirmed when you book.
